Behnia Zarei is a developer in Vienna with more than ten years in data, working on Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.
Hi, I'mBehnia.
A developer in Vienna with more than ten years in data engineering, cloud data and BI. I turn questions people answer by hand, again and again, into data platforms and reports that answer them, and I teach what I build.
From the source to the report.
For more than ten years I have worked on the way data travels. It leaves the systems a business runs on, goes through pipelines that load it every night, and lands in a lake where it is cleaned and joined. From there it feeds the models and reports people decide with. The work starts the same way every time: a question people answer by hand, again and again. I take it apart, learn where the numbers really come from, and build what answers it.
Here that work is on Microsoft's platforms: Azure Data Factory for the pipelines, Microsoft Fabric for the lakehouse and Power BI for the models and reports. This site shows 9 patterns I build with, 6 open courses (5 more on the way) and 6 talks for user groups and meetups.

Behnia Zarei is a developer in Vienna with more than ten years in data engineering, cloud data and business intelligence. Behnia builds data platforms on Azure and Microsoft Fabric, from pipelines that load only what changed to lakehouses in bronze, silver and gold, and the Power BI semantic models and reports people decide with, every KPI defined once. Behnia teaches the same in 6 free open courses, with 5 more on the way, and gives 6 talks on KPIs, charts, UI/UX and AI for Azure, Fabric and Power BI user groups. More at data.benibix.com.
Three platforms, one flow.
Azure data platform
Pipelines on Azure that bring data together from every system it is made in, load only what changed and run every night with nobody watching.
Works with- Azure Data Factory
- Data Lake Storage Gen2
- Azure SQL Database
- Key Vault
- Azure DevOps
Microsoft Fabric
One lake for all of it: a lakehouse in bronze, silver and gold, notebooks and pipelines that move data between the layers, and checks that stop bad rows early.
Works with- OneLake
- Lakehouse
- Data pipelines
- Notebooks
- Shortcuts
- Delta tables
Power BI
Semantic models with every KPI defined once in DAX, and reports a manager reads at a glance, in colours that work for everyone.
Works with- Semantic models
- DAX
- Power Query
- Star schema
- Direct Lake
- Report themes
The same four rules, every time.
- 01The question first
Before a pipeline or a report: the question it answers and who asks it. Everything after is built for that.
- 02One definition per number
Every KPI is written down once, in the semantic model, so two reports never disagree.
- 03Nothing lost in silence
Rows that fail a check are set aside with the reason, and every run says how many.
- 04Built to run without me
Pipelines in Git, releases the same way every time, and monitoring that tells someone before a report is wrong.
