Azure · Data · BI · Vienna

Many sources.One truth.

I'm Behnia, a developer in Vienna with more than ten years in data. Here is my work on Microsoft Azure and Power BI: data platforms, models people trust and reports they read at a glance.

How I build on Azure, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, and the courses and talks I give user groups and meetups, all of them free.

Focus

Three platforms, one flow.

Data comes in through Azure, is made right in Microsoft Fabric and is read in Power BI. I work on every step, from the source to the report.

01

Azure data platform

Pipelines on Azure that bring data together from every system it is made in, load only what changed and run every night with nobody watching.

Works with
  • Azure Data Factory
  • Data Lake Storage Gen2
  • Azure SQL Database
  • Key Vault
  • Azure DevOps
02

Microsoft Fabric

One lake for all of it: a lakehouse in bronze, silver and gold, notebooks and pipelines that move data between the layers, and checks that stop bad rows early.

Works with
  • OneLake
  • Lakehouse
  • Data pipelines
  • Notebooks
  • Shortcuts
  • Delta tables
03

Power BI

Semantic models with every KPI defined once in DAX, and reports a manager reads at a glance, in colours that work for everyone.

Works with
  • Semantic models
  • DAX
  • Power Query
  • Star schema
  • Direct Lake
  • Report themes
Certifications

10 certifications, each one checked.

Exams passed with Microsoft and GitHub, from Fabric and Power BI to two Experts: Azure Solutions Architect and Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect.

The work

How I build, step by step.

Each pattern is a problem every data platform meets, the build that solves it and the Microsoft services it runs on. Together they go from the source to the report: loading data in Azure, making it right in Fabric and reading it in Power BI. Pick one to see how it is built.

  1. Azure · 3 servicesOne pipeline, every table

A control table lists each source table with its key and when it was last loaded. One parameterised pipeline reads that list and copies every table in turn, so a new table is a new row, not a new pipeline.

    • Azure Data Factory
    • Azure SQL Database
    • Data Lake Storage Gen2
  2. Fabric · 4 servicesBronze, silver and gold in one lakehouse

The model at the top of this site: data lands in bronze as it arrived, is cleaned and joined in silver and is shaped for reports in gold, all in OneLake as open Delta tables.

    • Data pipelines
    • Notebooks
  3. Power BI · 3 servicesEvery KPI defined once

Each KPI is one measure in the semantic model, with a description and a format, so every report shows the same number. Year to date and last year come from one calculation group instead of a copy per KPI.

Open courses

Learn it here, lesson by lesson.

6 open courses on the three platforms: every lesson is on the site, to read and build along in your own workspace. 5 more are on the way.

Talks

Ready for your user group.

Free talks and workshops for Azure, Fabric and Power BI user groups, meetups and conferences, online or in Vienna, on KPIs, charts, UI/UX and AI. Every talk shows a working build.

  1. Azure · UI/UX · Talk, 30 minAlerts people act on

Monitoring is a user interface too. Run logs, dashboards and alerts designed for the person who gets them at seven in the morning: what broke, what it affects and what to do.

  2. Azure · AI · Talk or live demo, 45 minAI inside the pipeline

Free text in the source, tidy columns in the report: an Azure OpenAI step in a Data Factory pipeline that classifies, extracts and summarises as the data loads, paid once per row and checked like any other step.

  3. Fabric · Charts · Talk or live demo, 45 minCharts that update while you watch

Streaming data in Fabric Real-Time Intelligence, from an eventstream to an eventhouse to a Real-Time Dashboard: which charts work when the numbers move every few seconds, and which only make people dizzy.

  4. Fabric · AI · Talk or live demo, 45 minAI in the lakehouse

Copilot in Fabric notebooks for the code, AI functions that classify, translate and pull facts out of a text column, and a data agent that answers questions from the gold tables. What each is good for, and what to check.

  5. Power BI · KPIs · Talk, 30 to 45 minOne KPI, one definition

Why the same KPI comes out different in three reports, and how to define it once in the semantic model, with its time comparisons from one calculation group.

  6. Power BI · UI/UX · Talk or hands-on workshopReports people read at a glance

Themes, palettes and page layouts for Power BI reports, checked for contrast and colour blindness before anyone opens them.
